Classmate Registers

In every classroom, there is one object that silently observes everything without saying a word. This object is none other than the class register. It is on the teacher’s table. It looks very common and uninteresting. However, it contains the names of all the classmates and also bears the memories of a whole year. It appears to be nothing more than a journal with a list of names and numbers. However, it is much more than that for students.

Every morning, when the teacher opens the register and begins to call the names, the class comes to life. When a student responds to the call of a name with “present, ma’am” or “yes, sir,” this sounds simple. However, it signifies the presence of an individual with a identity and a role in the class. Some names are always first, and others last. Gradually, the children become aware of their identity in the register.

It also mirrors the diversities of fellow classmates. It contains various names, cultures, and personalities. Behind each name, a person who laughs boisterously, a person who keeps quiet, a person who assists others, and a person who struggles along silently.Nevertheless, there are times when the register evokes mixed feelings. When a name is called and there is no reaction, the teacher waits and marks the register accordingly. The blank reaction comes with a weighted presence, especially if the fellow student has been absent for a few days. Sometimes it may be an indication of illness, at other times it may be an indication of problems at home, and sometimes it may indicate the departure of a student from the learning institution.

However, on happier days, the register is associated with happiness. Prior to exams, trips, or celebrations, the roll call feels easier. Students react quicker, sometimes smiling or giggling. During birthdays, when the teacher unwittingly call the birthday child’s name, the classroom responds in claps and joking. The register unwittingly participates in the celebrations.

And as the year goes by, the register is filled with dates, signatures, and attendance records. And slowly, the register holds a page full of not only dates but the passage of time as well. Children grow, friendships evolve, memories are forged, but all along, the register records.
